Dry conditions apparently contributed to a fire early Saturday evening at the Whiteford Stoneco Community Park.
A spot of about 200 yards long and 75 yards wide from the softball field parking lot into softball field 6 is now scorched. The Whiteford Center unit of the Whiteford Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene to extinguish the fire.
Although there were several empty fireworks boxes in the nearby parking lot, the fire chief said he was not sure if that was the cause of the fire or not.
Mike Losey (the Nature Conservancy) and Walter Ruhl (township supervisor) look over some of the land that TNC has cleared and worked on as part of its efforts to restore about 14 acres of the Whiteford Stoneco Community Park property to a rare, Alvar Prairie. About 2 acres has been cleared so far, Mr. Losey said.
